One of the common failures of the 68RFE automatic transmission is that of the overdrive clutches. By nature, this transmission will go into overdrive what many would consider prematurely in order to lower RPM's in order to conserve fuel consumption. Unfortunately, the factory clutches are excessively thin and prone to overheating, so when you combine low RPM's, heavy loads or high horsepower, and a thin clutch count, you smoke the clutches.
